Make PPT editable

Make your PPT file editable again

Find out why a PowerPoint won't let you edit it, clear the setting in seconds, or convert a static, picture-only PPT into slides with real, editable text.

Each page is converted with AI layer conversion and charged separately. Pages convert sequentially; allow about a minute or more per page. Failed or stopped pages are refunded.

Why a PPT can't be edited

Locked by a setting

Protected View, Mark as Final, read-only and locked objects stop edits even though the content is still real text and shapes. Clear them inside PowerPoint.

Flattened into pictures

Decks saved from a PDF converter, exported from a design tool as images, or built from screenshots hold one picture per slide. Nothing on the slide can be edited until it is converted.

Converted in slide order

Upload a picture-only PPTX here. Each slide picture becomes editable text and image layers, in the original order, and downloads as a new PPTX.

If clicking a text box in your presentation does nothing, first look at the bar at the top of PowerPoint. Files from email or the web open in Protected View, and authors can mark a deck as final or recommend read-only. Those are settings, not damage, and the checklist below shows the click that clears each one.

If you can click a slide but the whole page selects as one object, the PPT is static: every slide is a picture. That happens when a deck is saved by a PDF converter, exported from a design tool as images, generated by an AI tool as page images or assembled from screenshots. No setting will help, because the words are pixels. The converter on this page reads each slide picture, rebuilds the text as editable text boxes, separates the visuals into image layers and puts the deck back together in the same order.

The converter accepts .pptx files up to 100 MB and 20 slides with one picture per slide. If your deck mixes real text with pictures, save it as PDF and use the PDF to PPT converter instead. Conversion costs the same as Standard image conversion, 40 credits per slide, charged slide by slide with failed slides refunded.

How to make a picture PPT editable

  1. 1

    Upload the PPTX

Choose a .pptx with one PNG or JPG picture per slide. Save legacy .ppt files as .pptx in PowerPoint first. Your browser reads the slides locally.

  2. 2

    Convert slide by slide

Each slide picture is uploaded and converted in order. Recognized text becomes text boxes and the artwork becomes separate image layers.

  3. 3

    Edit and download

Compare each slide with the original, fix anything uncertain in the editor, then download the editable PPTX.

Checklist

Unlock a PowerPoint before you convert anything

Work down the list. The first five are settings you can clear in PowerPoint in seconds; the last one needs conversion.

Protected View

Files downloaded from email or the internet open read-only for safety.

  • Look for the yellow bar that says Protected View.
  • Click Enable Editing if you trust the sender.

Marked as Final

The author flagged the deck as finished, so editing commands are hidden.

  • Click Edit Anyway on the yellow bar.
  • Or go to File > Info > Protect Presentation and click Mark as Final again to turn it off.

Read-only or password to modify

The file asks for a password or shows Read-Only in the title bar.

  • Enter the modify password from the author, or open it read-only just to view.
  • In File Explorer or Finder, clear the file's Read-only or Locked property.

Locked objects

In Microsoft 365, individual shapes and pictures can be locked so they can't be moved or edited.

  • Right-click the object and choose Unlock.
  • Or open the Selection Pane and click the lock icon next to the object.

Content on the slide master

Logos, footers and background text placed on the master or a layout can't be selected on normal slides.

  • Open View > Slide Master.
  • Select the layout the slide uses and edit or delete the element there.

Slides are pictures

If a whole slide selects as one image, no setting will make its text editable.

  • Upload the PPTX to the converter above (one picture per slide, up to 20 slides).
  • For a deck that mixes text and pictures, save it as PDF and use the PDF to PPT converter.
  • For a single slide, export it as PNG and use the image to PPT converter.

Make PPT editable FAQ

Why can't I edit my PowerPoint file?

Usually because it opened in Protected View, was marked as final, is read-only, has locked objects, or its content sits on the slide master. If each slide selects as one picture, the deck is image-based and needs conversion.

How do I turn off read-only in PowerPoint?

Click Enable Editing on the Protected View bar, or Edit Anyway on the Marked as Final bar. If the file asks for a password to modify, enter the password from the author. Also check that the file isn't set to read-only or locked in its file properties.

How do I make a picture-only PPT editable?

Upload it to the converter on this page. Each slide picture is turned into editable text boxes and image layers and saved as a new PPTX. Text that can't be recognized stays part of a picture layer.

Is my whole presentation uploaded?

No. Your browser opens the PPTX and extracts the slide pictures. Only the current slide picture is uploaded for conversion; the original file stays on your device.

My deck mixes real text and pictures. What should I do?

The PPTX converter only accepts one standalone picture per slide. Save the deck as PDF from PowerPoint and use the PDF to PPT converter, or export just the picture slides as PNG or JPG and use the image to PPT converter.
